Featured Employer: Mary Black Foundation

Established as an independent grant-making organization in 1996, the Mary Black Foundation has a mission to improve the health and wellness of the people and communities of Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The Mary Black Foundation defines "health and wellness" broadly - as complete physical, mental and social well being, and devotes the majority of its resources to efforts that address the underlying causes of poor health outcomes in Spartanburg County.

“We have adopted policies that are very family-friendly," says Molly Talbot-Metz, Director of Programs and mother of two young children.

Mothers and fathers receive 12 weeks of paid family leave upon the birth or adoption of a child, and most of the staff takes advantage of flex-time and telecommuting options offered.  A few mothers work 30 hours a week, working three days in the office and two mornings from home.  Other mothers work earlier hours to better suit the school schedules of their children, and one father uses flex-time to take an afternoon a week to spend more time with his children.  Breastfeeding is also supported and encouraged.

Talbot-Metz admits that the different schedules can sometimes be difficult to manage, but she is confident the benefits of flexible work schedules overshadow those challenges.  "It is well worth it.  Our staff is very happy and loyal.  I know that I am more productive!"
